Perry is the daughter of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both the two episodes she appeared on Roseanne. Her parents did not allow her to perform in front of her family until she reached an adulthood stage, because they were concerned about the strain it might create. Perry said that she was timid to perform during high school, but started doing shows in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry started her acting career as an actress in New York after graduation, landing minor parts on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry come back to California and find work as a theater actress. She appeared on Broadway in The Other Place with her mother in 2013. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was presented at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was in nine episodes of The Family, an ABC thriller The Family in 2016. Her father played her on the ABC show Scandal. She played the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. The part was offered to her through audition, despite the fact that she is a relative to the role.
